Heart disease often builds up quietly over many years, which is good news in one way: small habits, repeated every day, can make a real difference. None of the steps below needs a gym membership or a special diet.

Start with movement. A brisk thirty-minute walk on most days of the week is enough for most adults, and it can be split into three ten-minute walks. Take the stairs, get off the bus a stop early, or walk while you

take phone calls.
